It gives a coded summary of the observed weather at an aerodrome at a specific date and time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a new student pilot, a METAR may initially look like a random collection of numbers, letters, and symbols. However, the information usually appears in a standard order. Once this order is understood, decoding a METAR becomes much easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indian student pilots use METAR information to assess wind, visibility, weather, clouds, temperature, dew point, atmospheric pressure, and short-term weather trends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A METAR alone does not provide a complete flight briefing. However, it is an essential starting point for deciding whether present conditions are suitable for circuits, solo flights, navigation exercises, departures, and landings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is a METAR?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>METAR is a coded aviation weather report that describes the actual observed conditions at an aerodrome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It commonly includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Aerodrome identifier<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Observation date and time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Surface wind<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Visibility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Runway visual range<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Present weather<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cloud amount and height<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Temperature<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dew point<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>QNH<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recent weather<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wind-shear information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Short-term trend<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>METAR describes observed weather. The decoded information must be connected with aircraft limitations, flying-school procedures, personal limits, and the planned training exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Standard METAR Reading Order<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A useful reading sequence is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Report type \u2192 Airport \u2192 Time \u2192 Wind \u2192 Visibility \u2192 RVR \u2192 Weather \u2192 Clouds \u2192 Temperature \u2192 Dew point \u2192 QNH \u2192 Additional information \u2192 Trend<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reading every METAR in this order helps students avoid missing important information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Basic Training Example<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider this fictional METAR:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>METAR VIDP 160530Z 09006KT 3000 HZ SCT020 31\/25 Q1002 NOSIG<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a training example and not a current weather report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The complete meaning is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A routine weather report for Delhi, observed on the 16th at 05:30 UTC. Wind is from 090 degrees at 6 knots. Visibility is 3,000 metres in haze. Scattered clouds are present at 2,000 feet. Temperature is 31\u00b0C, dew point is 25\u00b0C, and QNH is 1002 hPa. Reading the correct report for the wrong aerodrome can lead to unsafe planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">160530Z<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This group gives the observation date and time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>16<\/strong> means the 16th day of the month.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>0530<\/strong> means 05:30.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Z<\/strong> means UTC, also called Zulu time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>India Standard Time is UTC plus 5 hours and 30 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>05:30 UTC = 11:00 IST<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>181800Z<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means the 18th day at 18:00 UTC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In India, this becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>23:30 IST on the 18th<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A late UTC time may convert to the following calendar day in India, so students must check the date carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">09006KT<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the wind group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>090<\/strong> means the wind is coming from 090 degrees.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>06<\/strong> means the wind speed is 6 knots.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>KT<\/strong> means knots.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The wind is therefore coming from the east at 6 knots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wind direction always indicates where the wind is coming from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gusting Wind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>24012G22KT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wind from 240 degrees<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Average speed 12 knots<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gusting to 22 knots<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The gust value is important because it may affect:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Crosswind limits<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Airspeed control<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Circuit stability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Approach technique<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Landing distance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go-around decisions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A wind of 12 knots gusting to 22 knots should not be treated as a simple 12-knot wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Variable Wind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VRB03KT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means the wind direction is variable at 3 knots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>18010KT 140V220<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Main wind from 180 degrees at 10 knots<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Direction varying between 140 and 220 degrees<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Variable wind can create changing crosswind conditions during circuit training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Calm Wind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>00000KT<\/strong> means calm wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Calm surface wind does not guarantee calm air at altitude. Wind conditions may be different above the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visibility Group<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the training example, the visibility group is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3000<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means the prevailing visibility is 3,000 metres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Common examples include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Code<\/th><th>Meaning<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>0500<\/td><td>500 metres<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>1500<\/td><td>1,500 metres<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>3000<\/td><td>3 kilometres<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>6000<\/td><td>6 kilometres<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>9999<\/td><td>10 kilometres or more<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The code <strong>9999<\/strong> does not mean unlimited visibility. It means the visibility is at least 10 kilometres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Directional Visibility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes visibility may be lower or higher in a particular direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A directional group can identify where the reduced visibility exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students should pay particular attention when reduced visibility lies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Along the departure path<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Toward the training area<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Near terrain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On final approach<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Along the planned cross-country route<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Runway Visual Range<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Runway visual range, or RVR, may be reported when visibility near a runway becomes operationally important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>R28\/1200<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Runway 28<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>RVR is 1,200 metres<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Possible tendency letters include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>U<\/strong> \u2013 increasing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>D<\/strong> \u2013 decreasing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>N<\/strong> \u2013 no significant change<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>R28\/0800D<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means the RVR for Runway 28 is 800 metres and decreasing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RVR and general visibility are not the same measurement. RVR relates specifically to the visual range along a runway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Present Weather<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the example, the present weather group is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HZ<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HZ means haze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Haze is operationally important in India because it may reduce:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul
